We read the book Many Luscious Lollipops and I had the children write two sentences about candy using three or more adjectives. I cut the lollipop out below and printed two on one sheet of oaktag(I did not use the stick). The kids created a front and back. We added glitter, cellophane and ribbon. They look great hanging in the room.

Show Don't Tell Writng
I taught a few mini-lessons from Razzle Dazzle Writing last week. The book is kid and teacher friendly and contains many printables. I have never been so excited to teach writing!
One of the lessons we did was "Show, Don't Tell." I projected the following page on the board. We read and discussed their examples.
Here are samples of the paragraphs my children wrote:

Wikki Stix Meets Geometry
Today we created Geometry Vocabulary Posters to review all of our terms. We used Wikki Stix to model each word. They had so much fun. The biggest challenge was folding the paper into 12 boxes!

More Similes This Week
I love this book! Very creative use of similes.
I had the children pick someone and write descriptive phrases using similes.

Synonyms, Antonyms and Homophones
We have covered synonyms, antonyms and homophones. Here are a few books that I used this week to review. The children love this series!
I had the kids make a flip book using the three categories. On the front of the flip book, they wrote the words, synonym, antonym and homophone and their definitions. On the inside, they wrote a sentence using a pair of words, with an illustration.
Here are a few examples:

Scientific Method and Community Reader
We had Community Reader's Day this week and enjoyed a great non-fiction book by a visitor from New Horizons Retirement Home. The children enjoyed learning about elephants and cats.
We wrapped up our first science unit on the "Scientific Method" by creating comic strips. The kids love graphic novels and I knew they would enjoy making their own. The comic page will be put into their Portfolio Book that will go home at the end of the school year.

Using Our Projectors and Poetry
We got new projectors in our classrooms this year to help bring technology into our classrooms. I downloaded the Kindle app for my PC. I can project books onto the whiteboard. Here are the children reciting poetry from The Poetry Friday Anthology(Common Core K-5).
We gather around the board on Fridays to read and discuss the poetry. We talk about the types, format, themes, etc. This week we had some children act the poem about watching football while other practiced fluency and reading with expression. The kids came in on Friday asking when we were doing poetry...so I know it was a hit. I will print out the poems for the children to share during Daily Five.
